They give you a lot when they're here and a lot when they're gone. Joy and pain, yes, all part of life but the pain and loss part is not something we are designed or supposed to get used to. Some do and they shouldn't have to.
I don't like the fact that we as a society give more to animal charities than humanitarian ones but it doesn't surprise me.

No niceties keeping horses when it comes to the end. Even as the " 'ard as nails bloke" I am (don't believe a word of it) having held up and supported the old dear below for six hours while the vet got there. Older than me, it was the right time for her. You aren't allowed to keep them afterwards, they have to go for cremation by law and it fell to me to oversee proceedings, the women, away together in group consolation. Once all done, I sat in the stable and broke and most of the time I just shovel their shit, but part of me stayed that way until that stable was filled again.

Many a child's first happy ride was on her, she could be stubborn and if the size of a normal horse would have been uncontrollable, but not a bad or malicious bone in her body.
Know what you are going through Emily. Xx

So sorry to hear that Xxx. I really think it was wring of the vets to say that she had been in pain for a long time, I am very sure that you would have noticed something, westies are touch little bods but complete wimps when it comes to the pain factor.
Brain humours can be quite quick to develop and any pressure on the brain would have shown in some way or form. So don't beat your self up, you wre the with her at the end and that is the most wonderful thing you could have done for her, to have someone she knew holding her, even as hard as it was for you.
IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
