If you think of the computer as a circular train track, with all of the programs, disk drives and files as stations.. the processor is the train going around. If a station is busy, loading and unloading takes longer.. if the "train" gets full it will miss out "smaller stations" because it has to make up the time and has no room left anyway.. the clock is the "smallest station" normally so every time it gets bypassed it "loses" it's setting.
If you are NOT running memory/ processor intensive programs then it COULD be the battery but as you are running off the mains that is highly unlikely - the mains power would be "charging" the battery constantly so the time loss would remain constant, only losing time when you disconnected the power. Just because you aren't running programs, there are at least 40 processes running in background. I presume you have anti-virus/ rootkit software installed. If you are using Mozilla Firefox and you leave it running all the time you are online it will run away with memory and slow your computer down.. main culprit is the "Plug-in container.exe" file.

That's very simplistic and does not quite explain everything - but the analogy works as a "graphic example". If you want a more technical explanation, just ask.

Eh !what! how can it be more technical than that

My only question is what happens if you fall asleep on the train and miss your stop on second thoughts dont answer that dont think my poor little brain could cope

Sounds like the "windows Time service" is corrupted You need to unregister, then reregister the service...

W32tm.exe is used to configure Windows Time service settings. It can also be used to diagnose problems with the time service. You have to run it from a command prompt.

Open a command window (Run cmd) Then type the following:
net stop w32time
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /register
net start w32time
w32tm /resync

Reboot the machine and see what happens (If you get an access error message then your firewall or antivirus will have to be temporarily disabled (disconnect from the internet while you do this, just in case)
