If you are just using it to check e-mails and surf the Net then get a Pay as you Go. I use an O2 Dongle for that which I just Top up as and when needed.
The time they hit you for the charges is if you are Uploading lots of files, especially Pictures, Clips and even worse if you try to Cam with one (and won't work that well).
Don't forget that whatever you spend on it is Tax Deductable anyway.

3 do one on a 1 month rolling contract, it is wifi too so you can connect up to 5 devices at the same time, ie laptop, phone and iPod. Google mifi and look on the 3 website.
The 1 month version has a 5gb download limit per month, and I have only managed to exceed it once

I have a 3 dongle. I paid £30 for the dongle and you get 3gb for 3 months

I think I topped it up for £20 for 3 months and another 3gb
