I worked Pre-internet and always asked the guy to detail what he was after, this also prevented any entrapment type police operation which happened from time to time

The way I recommend looking at it is; deal with enquiries like you are your own secretary. You're job is to deal with that call quickly and efficiently. Getting the information you need or giving them the information they need. It's a booking number not a sex chat line. Some guys phoning are time wasters with no intentions of booking you they just for whatever reason want to talk to you.
My tips would be think of your key questions and take control of the call. Dont let them call up claiming to know nothing and want to ask 50 questions about you're service. I have a text template on my phone directing to my website/AW that i can easily send anyone who I think is chancing there arm or wasting my time!
Some very good advice

My usual response is the same, as politely as I can. you soon suss out the genuine ones from the time-wasters, so it does depends on their attitude at the time.
You need to have a strict "IDIOT" procedure in place to work to and then bend it depending on the call, each call will be different, you will soon notice a pattern from the time-waster. they all think they are the first to say something / think something up. After 20 years of me answering calls they will struggle.
