Guys - Do you have a landline telephone?
#1
I very rarely do outcalls to private addresses unless I already know the guy (hotels are fine, though).

I do make exceptions though, if the property is in a good neighbourhood.

If I don't already know the guy, I generally wouldn't go to a flat unless it is a condo, I definitely wouldn't go to an "affordable housing" or council estate location and there are whole swathes of London which I just wouldn't consider (like Stockwell Park, for instance). It may sound snobby, but it really isn't - just just about my safety and security not only at the call, but also in the area. If I know the guy already then I am still not going to go to a notorious estate location, but I am happy to compromise on some of the other things.

And no matter how desirable the post code, there are certain checks I make to satisfy myself that the location is secure and the call is genuine. I've had a couple of bad experiences in the past and I am not desperate for the money, so i see no reason to put myself at risk. It may seem unfair to some guys, but I have to go with my gut instinct and if anything doesn't add up or even if it just doesn't feel right, I won't go.

One of the things I will want from a guy is his landline telephone number.

From time to time I get requests for outcalls from guys who claim that they do not have a landline.

Really?

I mean, I can imagine a young person in a rented apartment might not have one, but otherwise - why would you not have a landline?

So unfortunately, if a guy I've never met before wants me to make a call to his address and he doesn't have a landline, I gracefully decline and invite him to make an incall instead... which they usually don't... which only serves to re-enforce my belief that i was right not to go on the call.

So my question is... do you have a landline telephone, and if not, why not?

As a secondary question, is you were asking a girl to come to your home address, would you be reluctant to provide your landline number? And if so, why?

My answer to the first question is yes, I do have a landline telephone and a good job too because the mobile signal is very weak where I live.
Secondly, I think I would be reluctant to give a landline number to someone I didn't know or hadn't met before - I get far too many nuisance calls as it is and as has been said in other threads, not all WGs on AW are genuine! But if it was someone I already knew from a previous booking and was perfectly happy with them, then no problem.
Having said all that I would prefer to make an incall booking anyway but would also avoid some areas for the same reasons.

It is usually used to check against directory enquiries that the person is lving at the place they say they want you to visit. It would be better if you can call the guy and would probably look odd that you could not.

Apart from using it for the rating system I see very little reason for using the AW booking system. Personally I do not use it or ask people to. I prefer to speak with the guy so insist they call me to make the booking, regardless of if they use the booking system or not. I would also think that a guy would prefer to call the girl they wish to meeet with to speak with them.

This also relates to fake / scam profiles. Never pay to see private galleries unless you have spoken to the girl first. Unless you are simply looking for wanking material and have no intention of ever meeting her, in whcih case it would not matter if they are fake or genuine photos.

Yes I understand that, the question was in regards to not believing guys who say they can't provide one because they don't have one. I don't use this method because I don't have a landline and it would be hard for me to argue with any guy who said he doesn't either.

It's not that I don't believe them as such, I'm just astounded that that they don't. And if they don't then unfortunately they are unlikely to be getting a visit from me to their home address unless I already know them, that's all.

About 10 years ago Ofcom (or Oftel or what ever they are calling themselves) did a study into "households without a fixed line". It found that the vast majority were either young people in rented accommodation who considered installing a landline to be an unnecessary expense considering that they were only planning to stay a short while, or else people with very limited funds (socio economic groups D & E). It also found that most people without a landline relied on their mobile phones.

But that was a long time ago and things have moved on since then.

I guess that there must be a growing trend for people not to have a landline?

I must confess, I do wonder sometimes why I have one? If I could get high speed broadband without a telephone line, I probably wouldn't bother with it. Quite often I will use my mobile to make phone calls when I am at home and very few people call me on it.

I wonder whether the days of the fixed line are numbered?

With mobiles I've never seen the point. I have more than I need allowance wise on my mobile.

A long time ago I did some work for a company that did "call back" phone sex ie you phone them (never do it!!!) Anyway I had to have a landline... well after I stopped, because I dont really want to talk to peados, the phone quickly went in the bin as all I got was sale calls. The phone was always disconnected between working. Nightmare and I never understood how as I never ever gave out the number Dodgy

If you want to call somebody and you have both thier mobile and home number, which do you call? I would always call the mobile, if they are not home you will get them on it and also if they are home.

Sales calls are often random generated numbers dialled by computers, these days you get a lot of sales calls from computers and they have pre recorded sales pitches

Sky tv insist you have a phone line to connect the equipment too, but we never have ours plugged in, you do need it if you pay for extra services, rent films etc. But we never use ours for that.

In Spain we do not have a land line but use a dongle with a 5mb download speed, which is actually quicker than we have at home.

The down side of using only a mobile, some places do not get a good reception, so if you live in an area such as that you would be cut off

Yea, for sure.

There are a few people who i call their home numbers for (like my parents, for example) but most people I will just call their mobile. In fact, most people i don't even know their home number even if they have one. And if you asked me what my landline number is I would have look it up!

How things change.

Oh and I did try running broadband off a dongle, but the cost for the amount of data I use meant that it just didn't make good economic sense and it was tediously slow. Maybe mobile broadband prices are coming down though?
