'Prostitute' or 'Prossie' - What are your feelings about these words...

I care not one jot to any of the names that mean a seller of sex.
I call myself them and even ask guys to call me a dirty whore sometimes when I am getting shagged good and hard!
It is how they are used that can make them a derogatory term.

For years I have worked with the media in order to increase public awareness for the ladies killed and mutilated on the streets. My issue with the word prostitute is that it refers to what someone IS rather than the work they do; almost as if a species. I have encouraged journalists to use "indoor sex worker" or "outdoor sex worker" as do the acedemics.

The attorney general in the summation of the Peter Sutcliffe trial (I shall not increase his legend and refuse to call him by his nickname) said "the greatest tragedy were some of these women were not prostitutes, they were innocent, someone's mother, daughter or sister" as if the other womens lives had no validity due to being some kind of outsider.

Now having said that, at the front of my book about the industry, I chose to reclaim the word "whore" because I am happy calling myself this, but would never use it against someone else should they find it offensive.

Words ARE important, but also showing each other respect is equally as important. I have suffered far more at the hands of other ladies in the industry than the media or clients have ever thrown at me.

I have never used the words prossie or prostitute because i dont like them. i think it actually says more about the speaker than the listener. It is my opinion that the 2 words along with whore are old fashioned, class driven, derogatory and abusive. I dont like sex worker either as this is too pc, too vague and yet another americanism sneaking into our fine language. I am ok with hooker despite what i have just written. This is because it is already firmly planted in the language; i can remember hearing the term in my teens and that was 30+ years ago. In short, there is no real acceptable fluffy word to cover the job description. It is just a job description and not a lifestyle choice after all. Why must we call them anything? they know what they do, their people know what they do becuase they presumably have told them and their clients, punters, johns, customers, tricks, turns, sex worker interfacers know what they do. When i do visit a WG i make a point of telling her within the first 2 mins just how grateful i am for people like her. I explain that i am in a loving brilliant relationship that is vanilla and i need my antedote every so often of kinky wild sex. Without WGs acting my role play i would be a divorcee and for this I thank you one and all whatever you are called.

Very well said Simo. I think it's whatever you're comfortable with and I agree I don't like the term 'sex worker' either, mainly because there's a lot more to my job than sex. Alongside the obvious, for me it's also about companionship, caring, listening to client's troubles and worries, having fun and being a friend. Indoor Sex Worker & Outdoor Sex Worker sounds a little cold and mechanical, but I guess it's whatever floats your boat!

Words are funny things and I can be very funny with words..alot of words I just do not like! It's not an escort thing its a me thing! Yes there are many words I have to come across in the adult industry every day that I do not like and have to try hard not to react to. Why do some use the term 'Brass'? Is it short for brass nail, rhyming slang for tail, which is itself slang for, amongst other things, a woman and prostitute. Or is it short for Brass Flute is Cockney Rhyming Slang for Prostitute????
