I think it's safer to always have a separate phone, I use an old nokia brick as the battery life is amazing and the mic is actually really good on it.

As for your number on old phones theres no chance of them finding any info on you either, smart phones are not very safe, they link to all sorts like facebook, whatsapp etc just not safe at all.

I have done phone bookings where they get my mobile number for over 2 years now....not once has someone tried calling that number outside of a booking and I was solely phone chat for coming up to 2 years back in october.
