Independent Or Managed
#1
As an escort or cam girl you have the choice of working for yourself, managed or a bit of both.

Escorts can work from home, rent a flat / hotel room, work in a managed flat, parlour or work for an agency. Working from a managed flat, through an agency or in a massage parlour involves giving somebody else some of your earnings in return for them providing a service.

How much you hand over can vary from place to place, I have not heard of more than 60% being taken and it can be as little as 30%. I have worked for an agency but never worked in a managed flat or massage parlour. When working for an agency, I still advertised locally for myself, but the agency also got me extra work. The agency took 30% but it also charged the clients more, so I did not actually lose out, the agency also advertised in many top shelf magazines and got business from places I would not.

Massage parlours / managed flats have over heads as well as need to make a profit, like any business, they pay the rent, phone bill and do all the advertising, for this they expect a cut of what you take. The rake can vary but you have to consider what you are getting for what you give away. Is the flat busy? Are they spending enough on advertising? Do you get a maid to answer the phone / door when your busy. Working alone can cause dead spots in the day when you are too busy working to answer the phone and take later bookings.

Being Independent means that you have to find a place to work from, you are responsible for the bills, all the advertising etc... But on the plus side you get to keep all the money you make.

As well as advertising on Adultwork, I also have my own web site and promote myself through Twitter. My web site is promoted via advertising it on other web sites and making sure it has plenty of backlinks to it.

Cam girls have a different set up but can still be independent, work through a cam site or managed.

As an independent they can offer web cam bookings via there own web site and advertising through chat rooms or social media such as Twitter and Facebook. They get to keep all the money paid to them but will pay a percentage depending on how they collect the money. They can ask clients to make a direct bank transfer so lose money. The down side to this is the amount of advertising they would need to do to keep busy

Cam sites such as Adultwork offer the best way to get started in web cam, they have an instand client base and you can earn money right away, for this they take a percentage of what you earn. You can also work for 2-3 cam sites at the same time to increase you're earnings as well as promote yourself via your own web site or social media sites.

Being managed, such as in an adultwork group, is much like working through a cam site, somebody takes a percentage of your earnings and should offer you added advantage to your earning potential. They should be getting you extra work not just taking a percentage of your earnings.

There is nothing wrong in other people making money out of you, after all, is that not what happens to most of the working population when they work for other people, as long as they are making you money.

Good post, Sarah!

Personally, I don't think that being managed is a bad thing for either cam girls or escorts. Some girls, especially when they start out, just don't have a clue where to start with advertising, marketing and generally just getting details out there. Even having premises to work from can present a significant challenge. An escorting career that starts like that can be very short lived!

I started out in this business working for someone else. I learned a lot and earned well. I'm independent now and much happier being my own boss, but if it came to it I wouldn't hesitate to go back to an agent again.

There are forums, blogs, and books out there that can give a camgirl a very good headstart in the business, and particularly in what she needs to avoid. The rest is gained through experience. If her only reason in joining a group is to learn about camming, then she's doing it very very wrong, and giving up a good chunk of HER money in the process!

I don't know how things work for escorts, and of course I imagine the support and back up of an agency, and not having to find and make bookings yourself, might be an advantage, especially when starting out.

Web cam girls however, need only a computer, internet connection, and profile on a camsite to start out. The rest is learned by jumping in the deep end. Fortunately we don't have to deal with our customers in person, and there is little to no paperwork involved. Exposure/ promotion is very easily done by yourself via social networking, as are taking pictures. No need for any extra "help", especially when you must pay for it.

KinkyDirtyBitch's Porn Central, and Princess Jenny's Daily Pay are the only genuinely useful groups on AW (that take a % of earnings). KDB's by virtue simply of her notoriety and connections, and PJ's because of having your pay daily. However, it's always best for a girl to start out by herself and learn how things work. Then she can make informed choices later on about which services she wishes to utilise, if any.

Yea, I can see that... I guess that you do have to exercise caution with regards to who is managing you, and it is easy to end up being taken advantage of.

It's a tough old world out there.

I guess this is all to do with the scam groups thread...

But there are genuine groups who will benefit the girls who join them, and there are agents and agencies who will help a girl too. I was very busy when I was working through an agent and when I first went indi I did far, far less business. Now that I've been around for a while and have built up a base of regs, I'm probably about as busy as I was under an agent... the difference being, of course, that all the money is mine! And... I get to choose my own clients and my own working times, and almost all of my work is incalls.... bonus!

So yea, life is much better as an indi... but like I said before, if it came to it and for some unforeseen reason working independently was no longer an option for me, then I wouldn't hesitate to work with an agent again.

My philosophy is dont put all of your eggs in 1 basket at the minute I do all 3,I am independant the vast majority of the time but I also take booking from a large local agency and do a couple of days in a parlour.

Recently a parlour that I was working at closed now if that was my only source of income that I had I would have been up shit creek if I had nothing else to fall back on.

I also remember last year when adultwork was down everyone was panicing now if I had not advertised elsewhere as an indie I would have been one of those that where totally panicing again.

I suppose what I am saying if you have chosen this profession to make a living out of go the whole hog get yourself out there and get noticed it doesnt need to cost you a fortune infact as far as internet advertising is concerned all it costs me is £1 a day to display my number,I did my own website which was free along with free domain name and hosting along with what Sarah said lots of reciprocal links to other free sites which are also free
