Adultwork should be responsilbe for fraud by unverified members
#1
Hello everyone,

Has anyone found themselves in this situation and how to rectify?

I do directchat and directIM.  A chat I had with someone went into ‘escrow’ and showed as a debit. I contacted ADultwork to enquire, and was surprised at their reply.  They said that the member I chatted to was ‘unverified’ and that until he uploads ID, my chat amount will be a debit and in escrow.  I may get the credits if he uploads ID. The exact reponse was this:

Quote:Hello

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately any persons choosing to make an income on the internet will be exposed to some risk of fraudulent activity.

We are sure you will appreciate that although we do our best to combat this problem, the costs of running this site and absorbing the losses from those that defraud it are considerable. In many instances fraudulent activity is detected after the event (i.e. the credits have been withdrawn from our system by a Service Provider) .

If the member provides the ID then the credits will be returned to you.

AdultWork.com reserves the right to suspend credits for 180 days where we believe there to be transactions that contravene our Terms and Conditions or that are suspected of being fraudulent.

Please refer to our User Agreement for further information.

I find this unacceptable for the following reasons.

When I joined I had to upload ID. I was informed this was mandatory to safeguard members. I assumed everyone had to.

Now I learn that is not the case, and even worse verified members are forced to pay the price unfairly for those who are not verified. How is this fair or even tolerated by other members here?

I understand the concept of ‘my club, my rules’ that Adultwork operates on, and I accept that. But if when joining you are told that uploading ID and becoming verified is mandatory you assume others will be too, and that you won’t be paying the price for the unverfication of others.

This isn’t about the money, it is about the principle.    We verify, and then we are told that we have to pay the price for the members Adultwork CHOOSES not to verify and lets them loose on the site to potentially scam us verified members. Surely, Adultwork should be paying for their failure to verify members?  You cannot have a situation when you allow unverified members and then don't accept the cost of the fraud (if any) they do.

This seems unfair and scammish, so the questions are:

1. Shouldn't Adultwork foot the bill for the fraud comitted by members who are allowed to roam freely as unverified members on the site given that others are made to verify before joining?

2. How do I prevent ‘unverfied’ members from calling me on Direct chat, Direct Im and Direct Cam?

3. What recourses have others had who have been in a similar situation?  As I said, it is not about this particular chat. One cannot work, if each time, you think that the chat you do could be going into ‘escrow’ and maybe you will lose the credits because Adultwork didn’t verify the member. There is no logic to this. It seems like a kind of fraud.

Hi, if you have a shop and you have a card machine, the card operator verifies you. A customer walks in and buys something, turns out they stole the card.

Is it the card company or you as a business that takes the hit? Its you.

You dont need to be verified to work on AW, unless they specifically ask you to verify. Even if AW did verify the customers (no other site does this and its not a common thing anywhere on the net) this doesnt stop fraud.

AW encourage clients to verify, but mass forced verification? There wouldnt be an Adultwork left for you to earn on.

As you are a business, fraud is to be expected at some point. In your business plan, how have you accounted for fraud?

If he uploads ID you get the credits, if he doesnt upload ID you still get the credits. Its only in the event of fraud that the credits are sent back to the bank.

no I did not, thanks. It is not so much the credits ( I dont begrudge AW their right to compensation) it is the sneaky way it is done. Very unfairly.

Thank you for your reply, but with all due respect the comparison is flawed, it is like comparing apples to oranges.

1. The banks verify the customer before issuing a card. I am aware that fraud goes on as you correctly note, but that is not the issue here. When there is a fraudulent transaction with the bank, the police get involved. There is a procedure where I would be involved. There is not with AW. It is all handled by AW and the customer (me) has no input. Besides, AW do not vet the buying customers as you yourself noted above. So there is no comparing with banks and shops and credit cards.
2. The business doesn't necessarily take the hit, if there is insurance. The option doesn't exist with Adultwork. Service providers are not offered the option of purchasing insurane in case the buyer is fraudulent.

AW should think of a better and fairer way to deal with fraudulent buyer customers. The current one isn't fair and to do it because the banks supposedly do would only hold valid if AW offered all the protection and services that banks do.

Don't you agree?

thought id chuck in my 5 cents. yeah this really is different to someone buying goods with a stolen card in a shop, because as has been pointed out if that happened the police could be involved and you could sue for compensation which we cannot. another thing worth mentioning, admin mentioned you dont have to be verified to work on here, but im pretty sure you do because its a legal requirement to make sure no content is being provided by underage people, thats standard for any cam site or content site etc.
it would be unheard of to require clients verify off the bat however, and would deter people because they could use other site without the faff. i would say however that other sites at least encourage it by capping the amount someone can spend without verification (chaturbate for example)
alas i doubt this is something that is ever going to change, although i dont think a spending limit to encourage verification would be a problem as its the method used in larger sites.
i think it is possible for you to insure yourself against fraud if you insure under 'small business' (perhaps), although i have no idea if it would be worth it. considering theres no such spending limit on aw it does mean that there is potential for you to loose out on large amounts of money so it could be. thankfully i work mostly on cb now so i know i cant loose more than £7.50 per fraudulent transaction and its not like they happen often, infact ive not experienced it at all as of yet!
finally, im sorry this happened! i cant image how frustrating and disappointing it must be to loose out on getting paid for work you did. i hope it doesnt happen again any time soon!!

I do have to disagree with this. They should take the hit for fraud, not us. Adultwork are in a bigger and better position than those offering services on their site. We lose 300 credits we made one day, that could be multiple bills we’re unable to pay.. the profit AdultWork makes? I’m sure they could take it. Some camsites like Streamate offer chargeback protection and I think that should be commonplace among most websites.

I think AW should take the hit not because they ar bigger and make more money but because they allow unverified buyers onto the site in the first place. It is not good enough to say that customers don't want to be verified, when they have to buy credits using credit cards and bank accounts.

No neither did I.. and unfortunately mine was for over 300 credits... I think this is very unfair as we have no way of knowing if they are using a stolen card etc... shouldn’t be us taking the hit unless it’s our responsibility... and as for the shop rubbish... that’s not how it works at all... a business has insurance to cover this kind of thing.. it has made me really wary now when I get a long call incase it happens again x
