BBcode icons

so i have been going through some profiles and see hearts, stars, red ticks and various other icons.

I have been to many website and tried all their codes for these but still not showing anything

: heart : don't work (without spaces) i just see the : heart : as text in profile 

I have searched here and a few posts come up with same issue and as usual on Forums the OP just says yay i done it without posting how they done it.   

 Can someone post up the bbcode that they use.
