Thank god I had visions of weeks and weeks of work doing a new site and going through all the directories again

You wouldn't have needed to go through all the directories again Ems, just throw up a new site and point your domain name to it. Then all the directories would go to your new site.
Creating a new site would be much less traumatic this time round, as you now have some experience. We're confident in your abilities - outside the kitchen.
